USDA approves waiver excluding candy, soda from food-assistance purchases

Laura Kelly announced Wednesday that the federal government approved the state's request to exclude candy and soda from purchases covered by federal food assistance benefits. The waiver excluding those foods, required by language in the state budget approved last year, was submitted to the U.S. Department of Agriculture on May 8.
